Top Five Favourite Actors

Having watched many films and TV shows, I do sometimes stop and think of the actors who gave us amazing performances throughout their careers. Here are my top five favourite actors of all time.

5. Adam Driver

Despite the criticisms Disney faced with how they handled the new Star Wars trilogy, you can't deny the performances in the film. Adam Driver really stood out for me throughout the three films. His performance as Kylo Ren is both raw and intimidating with some great emotional range. He was enjoyable in the film BlackkKlansman where he plays an FBI agent helping to expose the KKK in America. He then elevates his range in the fantastic Marriage Story where he plays a father going through divorce. Unfortunately his performance wasn't quite enough to get him the Oscar, but his acting holds up really well and allows the audience to resonate with the character on a very strong and emotional level.

4. Donnie Yen

Chinese actor, more famously known for his role as Chirut Imwe in Rogue One, has been prominent in Chinese cinema for years. In 2008, he played the title character of Ip Man for the martial arts biopic of the man who studied Wing Chun and went on to train Bruce Lee. Donnie's performance in all four of the Ip Man films was very memorable. He demonstrates the range he has to play a calm, wise man one minute, to an emotionally distraught person the next. Whether he plays Ip Man accurately or not is irrelevant as he makes the character his own and his performance doesn't falter in any of the four films.

3. Troy Baker

Widely regarded as a video game voice actor, Troy Baker is famous for his diverse roles from the villainous Two-Face in Batman Arkham City to the redneck badass Joel from The Last of Us. His talent for playing characters relying mainly on his voice (as opposed to live action performing) has allowed him to gain a massive following as he effortlessly fills these characters with all kinds of story arcs. His performance as Joel stands out for me as he has to display a wide range of emotions, from anger, fear, struggle and resentment aswell as the occasional light hearted moments that are featured in the story.

2. Andy Serkis

Originally gracing our screens as the motion capture character, Gollum from the Lord of the Rings films, Andy Serkis has proven himself to be the master of CGI characters. Aswell as his outstanding portrayal of Gollum, he blew people away as the character of Caesar from the rebooted Planet of the Apes films. His emotional range was fantastic, particularly as he had very few lines of dialogue. His onscreen movements were accurate to that of an actual chimpanzee aswell as the manorisms. This was his second time playing an ape. In 2005, he played the titular character in Peter Jackson's King Kong reboot. He also gives an excellent performance as Ulysses Klaw, a Marvel villain featured in both Age of Ultron and Black Panther.

1. Anthony Hopkins

For me, this is simply a no brainer. Hopkins has appeared in a large variety of films over the forty plus years of his career and has played some iconic roles. Most notably, his performance as Hannibal Lecter. Incredibly, Hopkins only appears in Silence of the Lambs for a mere sixteen minutes, yet his portrayal was impactful enough to get him an Oscar. He's also appeared in Mutiny on the Bounty, The Edge, Beowulf, Thor and very recently, The Father where his amazing performance of a father suffering from dementia won him the Oscar once again. Anthony Hopkins has a very strong understanding of how to portray characters effortlessly to the point where we don't feel like we're watching him act, he's simply just there in the moment and he's always fascinating to watch.
